As you would be aware, work is underway to restore the Murwillumbah High School site so the school can resume operations next year.
This work includes removing asbestos from the school buildings so they can be refurbished. As outlined in the attached works notification, this work will start on Wednesday 12 June 2024 and take place progressively until the end of August 2024.
In planning for this work, the project team and I have been mindful that the agricultural studies program will continue to use the site during this time.
Ensuring the safety of students and staff is our highest priority and we have agreed a number of work processes with this in mind.
· Removal of asbestos from Block D (the building closest to the agricultural areas) will take place either during the school holidays or at times when there are no agricultural students or staff onsite.
· Movement of trucks carrying asbestos via the school access road onto Nullum Street will be scheduled around the agricultural studies timetable and done at times when there are no agricultural students or staff onsite.
· Other safe working methods are outlined in the works notice.
In the lead up to asbestos removal starting, and while the work is underway, I will be meeting regularly with the project team and contractors as is usual practice. Please be assured I will only agree to activities where I am confident there is no risk to student or staff safety.
